Khedrup Khungpo Naljor

  • 1140: he was born in Nyemo into the Khungpo family. His father’s name was Tagkhye and his mother’s name was Tashi Kyi.

  • Originally he was Bonpo but he converted to Buddhism. He became learned in the teachings of the Nyingma sect.

  • He visited India and Nepal where he received teachings on sutra and tantra and extensive religious instruction from one hundred and fifty scholars.

  • He became proficient in the tradition originating from Niguma, the consort of Naropa, and then returned to Tibet.

  • In Shang-Shang, in the region of Shang, he founded a huge monastery which contributed to the teaching of the Kagyu lineage and became renowned as the Shangpa Kagyu.

  • It is said that he had eighty thousand disciples in all, and that he reached the age of one hundred and fifty.
