Tibetan Medical Camp

Monlam Grounds
Bodhgaya

24 January 2024

Endowed with an ocean-like treasury of qualities and merit,
You calm the torment of suffering living beings endure
With the blessing of your inconceivable compassion.
I supplicate you, Deep Blue Light.
                         Medicine Buddha Sadhana

This year for the 38th Kagyu Monlam, the Gyalwang Karmapa requested the Tibetan medical college at Sherabling to organise a Tibetan Medicine medical camp. [The Sherabling campus includes the Palpung University for Buddhist Sciences which provides a training course in traditional Tibetan medicine.]
The medical camp is headed by Dr. Dawa and Dr. Epa Sonam Rinchen. There are four other doctors and twelve newly-qualified students who have just finished their medical studies at Palpung. In addition, Dr. Kalchoe Qusar
from Dharamshala has joined the team, making 19 doctors in total.
This year the focus is on medicines and treatments in the Tibetan tradition, so there is no acupuncture nor is there any allopathic treatment.
More than 1500 patients have registered and even more have been treated.
Each year at Kagyu Monlam, thousands of people gather together in a confined space, so it is easy to fall ill. The environment in Bodhgaya adds to the difficulties; it’s dusty and dirty.  There are also many older Himalayan people who spend the winter in Bodhgaya because the weather is usually better here, and they too attend Monlam.
This year the January weather in Bodhgaya has been unusually cold, but despite this, the doctors have worked very hard and tirelessly to examine, diagnose and treat their patients who are suffering from colds, gastric upsets, aches and pains. Many patients have said this has been a great benefit and they have returned several times for treatment.
